About Mental Health Nursing, BSc (Hons) - at University of Greenwich

With mental health being in theforefront of the nation's mind, now is the most powerful time to step in andmake a difference.

Our degree offerspre-registration nursing in the specialist field of mentalhealth.

The courses within our degreeoffer both theoretical and practice learning in a variety of settings. We haveexcellent links with the NHS and other care providers and will arrange yourplacements in both hospitals and community settings.

Work placements

Placements will be in a varietyof institutional and community settings such as hospitals, clinics, healthcentres, forensic services, assessment and intervention services, and schools.You will spend 50% of your time each year in these valuable work placementswhere you will be assessed by qualified practitioners. 

Our degree has a strong focuson intrapersonal and interpersonal development. We put particular emphasis oncritical thinking, reflexivity and the ongoing development of self and others. Thisis based upon the principle of family centred care. Your training with us willcover caring for individuals with mental health problems across all age bands.

As a student nurse we willteach you to be proficient in essential evidenced-based skills. This is pairedwith developing the values and person centred approaches needed by yourpatients.

Mental health nursing skillsare taught and assessed in our four, state of the art laboratories, ensuring you developcompetence in a safe, protected environment.

The knowledge, skills andvalues you acquire with us will help you empower your patients and theirfamilies in making informed, vital health decisions.

We also promote multi-professional and collaborative working, withshared learning between nursing and midwifery students.

Registration

Throughoutour programme we prepare you to apply for registration with the Nursing andMidwifery Council (NMC) as registered Mental Health Nurses.

The programme willensure youhave achieved the outcomes identified in the NMC Standards for Pre-registrationNursing Education (NMC 2010) including the standards for competence and theEssential Skills Clusters and the requirement of Directive 2005/36/EC. Theintellectual, professional, academic and practical competencies that you willacquire as  a Mental Health Nursinggraduate are informed by the European Tuning Project 2009, 3.2.

Attendance

The BSc Hons Mental Health Nursing programme begins in both September and March at our Avery Hill Campus.
