The MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology will be of interest to students wishing to pursue a career as a sport and exercise psychologist or in applying principles of sport and exercise psychology to their work (e.g. coaching, physical education, sport science). The programme explores the interdisciplinary nature of applied work and provides an advanced understanding of how performance enhancement and wellbeing promotion can be applied and is promoted with individuals, teams, parents, coaches and sport and exercise organisations across a wide range of sports, ages and abilities.
The programme enables students to develop an in-depth understanding of the current psychological issues in sport and exercise including variables relating to the development of expertise across the lifespan, transitions in and out of sport and exercise and optimum performance as well as the impact of participation in sport and exercise on psychological wellbeing. Students will consider how individual athletes, teams, coaches, parents and sport and exercise specific cultures influence performance factors and exercise adherence and explore the efficacy of interventions with these populations.
The degree will prepare students for further training as sport and exercise psychologists, careers including; physical education, coaching and research. The programme will seek accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS) in the first year (2016 - 2017). Once achieved, the accreditation will apply to graduates from the 2016-2017 cohort. An accredited MSc will satisfy completion of Stage 1 of the BPS qualification and will prepare students for Stage 2 and eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist.
