Course summary

Overview

This course provides an opportunity to study governments, societies and the interaction of people, ideas and institutions which will provide the focus to understand how values are allocated and resources are distributed in various global contexts.
As a foundation year student you will take two modules which focus on equipping you with the skills and attributes needed to thrive as an undergraduate student. The foundation year also provides you with the opportunity to meet and interact with fellow foundation year students across the University.
Why choose this course?This course provides you with an opportunity to examine the contemporary world at local, national and global levels. It has an emphasis on the critical appraisal of today's global problems, with the aim of developing critical reading and debating skills gradually, across all levels of the course. 
The experiential module 'Working in Political and International contexts' will provide a valuable opportunity to experience theory in practice and this is complemented by a balance of practical, policy and theory driven assessments throughout the extent of the course, culminating in the final Dissertation project.
Career and study progressionUpon graduation you will have developed pragmatic research capability and knowledge that you will be able to apply to professional settings within a workplace. You will have learned to think independently, developed a problem solving attitude with extensive knowledge base, attributes highly sought after in the workplace and valued by employers.

Funding

Help with funding is available to a range of students, whether you are studying full or part-time, in your home country or overseas.

You may be eligible for a student loan to cover the cost of tuition fees or a maintenance loan to support you during your studies. We also offer a range of scholarships and bursaries to help you. Current scholarships include:

  • Full Time Undergraduate Bursary: a £3,000 award for new undergraduate students.
  • Path to Success Scholarship: a £4,000 award for students on a four-year degree course with a foundation year.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year. Fees may be subject to government regulations on fee increases. Future inflationary increases will be applied to each subsequent year of the course, subject to government regulations on fee increases.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

You will need 72 UCAS tariff points at level 3, which would normally include at least two subject areas. We also require GCSE Grade C or above in English language and mathematics or equivalent level 2 qualifications.

Mature students without the above qualifications who have relevant work experience are invited to apply. Such applications will be considered on an individual basis and may be required to attend an interview.

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
