About Archaeology, MRes - at University of Winchester

MRes Archaeology offers an intensive research training programme with a high level of supervisorial contact. It is suitable for those who have a clear idea of a research topic, but who need to acquire new research skills or hone existing ones before commencing a research degree. In part-time mode this programme is also suitable for those working in the archaeology, heritage or environment sector who wish to enhance their research experience.Entry requirements: Normally a first or upper second class Honours degree in Archaeology or a related disciplineIf English is not your first language: IELTS 6.5 (including 6.5 in academic writing) or a TOEFL score of 575 (paper-based) or 232 (computer-based) or equivalentApplication process: UKPASS (full-time applicants only) or Direct Entry Application Form (part-time applicants only)Programme ContentThis is very much a research methods and practice course, so the content focuses firmly on these aspects rather than on acquiring general archaeological knowledge.ModulesModules of study include research methods modules, a dissertation methods module, an individual research orientation module (directed reading, technical training and literature review), a module on an archaeological period, theme or approach (taken from a choice of several modules) and a dissertation on a subject of the student’s choice. Students research topics that fall within the research interests of staff. These encompass periods from the Palaeolithic to the postmedieval, range geographically from Europe into Africa and Asia and across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, and encompass themes including religion, art and architecture, burial practices, landscape archaeology, environmental archaeology, geoarchaeology, Romanisation and warfare.AssessmentMethods of assessment include essay writing, presentations, reports, research plans and literature review, and the dissertation. The dissertation, a 25,000 word long piece of original research, is the culmination of the programme.CareersMRes Archaeology acts as a preparation for undertaking an MPhil or PhD or as a basis for an advanced career within archaeology or a related discipline.
