This international study programme is offered by the Faculty of Science in collaboration with the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Biology. The two-year master's programme focuses on functions and interactions of living cells and their molecular constituents, drawing on research methods used within the field.
What is the programme all about?
The Master of Biophysics, Biochemistry and Biotechnology (Leuven) programme provides in-depth training in multidisciplinary fields, with particular emphasis on subfields in which KU Leuven's research expertise is internationally recognised: molecular modelling, spectroscopy of biomolecules, optogenetics, and the biophysics of neural circuits.
Structure
Students on this two year Master programme will select one of two profiles, either Biophysics or Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
Introductory courses comprise a maximum of 18 ECTS points can be obtained from the introductory courses in order to fill any gaps. Core courses are specific to each of the two profiles and through Elective Courses, students may select relevant courses from the entire programme offered at the university if they have the approval of the programme director.
Finally, 30 ECTS are obtained upon completion and defence of your second Master thesis project.
Strengths
This study programme will prepare and equip you to enter the workplace with all the necessary skills, expertise and experience to solve many of the greatest challenges facing the fields of Biophysics, Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
The mission of the Department of Physics and Astronomy is exploring, understanding and modelling physical realities using mathematical, computational, experimental and observational techniques. It consists of five divisions performing high quality research on Hard and Soft- condensed matter & Biophysics, Nuclear Physics, Theoretical Physics and Stellar Astrophysics.
The Department of Biology is committed to excellence in teaching and research and comprises four divisions with diverse research activities ranging from molecular and physiological research at the level of cells and organisms to ecological research on populations, communities, and ecosystems.
The Department of Chemistry consists of five divisions, which conduct research embedded in collaborations with other well-established universities, research institutes and companies around the world.
These departments assist students in realizing their full potential and acquiring the skills they will need to find the right place of employment.
